The significant economic development in Bangladesh, during over forty years of her journey as an independent country has been transformational in many respects. The Gross Domestic Product (GDP) of Bangladesh has increased, poverty rate in the country has come down and sectoral performances in the economy has been impressive. The country’s overall growth is remarkable which has been significantly facilitated by rapid growth in financial and banking sector. Not only number of banks and financial institutions increased, but their product range and spatial coverage have also widened.
The need for a comprehensive compilation of details on all banks and financial institutions of Bangladesh has long been felt. The work on Banking Almanac has been undertaken with valuable assistance from Bangladesh Bank to meet this long felt need. The Almanac is the first of its type in the country. It is hoped that it will facilitate easy access to important details on banks and financial institutions in Bangladesh with greater transparency on them in the public domain.
Foreword by the Chairman,
Board of Editors
Banks and Financial Institutions have been contributing to our trade, commerce, investment, growth and development in national, regional and international contexts. In South Asia, we have been exposed to the experience of functioning modern banking and financial institutions, in varying degrees, over a very long period of time, dating back to British Colonial Rule. In the post partition period, part of South
Asia which now constitutes independent Bangladesh, saw new banks and financial institutions emerging in our economic landscape. But it is only after our independence in 1971 that, modern banking and financial sector has had its most phenomenal growth in Bangladesh. Not only the numbers of such banks and financial institutions have increased many fold, their spatial coverage, financial products variety and overall contribution to the national economy have undergone significant changes.
It has long been felt that the data and information on the banks and financial institutions in Bangladesh should be available in a consolidated form, both for practitioners and general users. The compilation of relevant information and data on the sector is required to generate confidence of people and enable them to compare services. Unfortunately, though much needed, no such compilation is presently available. Read More
Finally the book Banking Almanac: Banks and Financial Institutions of Bangladesh-2016 has been published. I believe this is the first book on Bangladesh’s Banking and Finance sector. This is one of the valuable additions in maintaining information and data flow among the local and global people of this sector.
Our idea on Banking Almanac is much older that was initiated in 2005 and implemented in 2016, eleven years in between already
passed. Although there was very specific project proposal including implementation framework on Banking Almanac but it was delayed due to lack of funding.
My little initiative to publish this book has been successful with the assistance and encouragements of many scholars and distinguished personalities of this sector. The members of the Board of Editors are very much renowned in their respective professions. The Editorial Members are Dr. Salehuddin Ahmed, Chairman, Dr. Hossain Zillur Rahman, Professor Khair Jahan Sogra, Md. Nazrul Huda, Mohammed Nurul Amin, Ambassador (rtd) Liaquat Ali Choudhury, Mohammad Amanullah and Mominul Islam. Read More
