Welcome to Banking Almanac (2018 and 2019) - Third Edition

The Almanac on Bangladesh banks and financial institutions are being regularly compiled and published beginning from the year 2016.The present edition of the Almanac is a rich updated source, in one volume, of information on our banks and financial institutions which are significantly contributing to the wide range of economic activities- trade, commerce, investment and CSR activities in Bangladesh. The impacts of their activities continue to be of utmost significance and importance.

The Almanac in its present version has much to offer in the form important details on their organizational and capital structure, spatial coverage of operations, banking and financial products offered, details on performance indicators and many other aspects of their policy and operational thrusts. The Almanac is a unique comprehensive source of information which will be of great value to all those who would like to have a good source book of information on our financial institutions.

Banking and financial institutions are important constituent parts of our national economic architecture. The number of these banks and financial institutions was very modest when Bangladesh first became independent almost fifty years back. But their number has phenomenally grown and now it is at times difficult to follow up on a real time basis the information and details on their nature, organizational structures, operation, product range and performance indicators given the increase in their numbers and the evolution in the nature of their operations and extent of their operations details of which are available but not in one source or location. The project on bringing out an annual Bangladesh Banking and Financial institutions was first mooted to present in a single published compendium the information on these institutions which was not readily available. The first two editions of the Almanac were warmly received. The present edition of the Almanac is an updated version of its earlier two editions. Readers will find the present edition of the Almanac specially interesting as it provides the most recent compilation of materials on our banks and financial institutions in the midst of a most pervasive economic crisis which Bangladesh is going through presently as a consequence of, among others, of the COVID 19 crisis. The same multidisciplinary Editorial Board guided the work of the Almanac.

Foreword for the Third Edition
Chairman, Board of Editors, Banking Almanac

saleh-uddin-ahamed Dr. Salehuddin Ahmed Former Governor, Bangladesh Bank Chairman, Board of Editors, Banking Almanac

The year 2020 has been an exceptionally difficult year for the global economy. With the outbreak of the COVID 19 pandemic, all our countries, including Bangladesh, have had to deal with the severe health consequences of the pandemic. Adverse economic impacts of the unprecedented crisis have been no less serious. Our plan to bring out the present edition of the Bangladesh Banking Almanac on time also suffered as it turned out to be specially challenging to collect materials and information when our banking and financial institutions themselves were going through serious operational disruptions and curtailed routine work. We, however, felt that it would be important to bring out the Almanac as the availability of its updated version will serve the purpose of providing the much sought after information on the continued importance of the health of our banking and financial institutions in the midst of the present crisis. Notwithstanding the crisis in which Bangladesh find her today, these institutions remain pivotal for their continued role in ensuring the strength of our economy and also for our efforts to overcome the pandemic induced economic slowdown through implementation of targeted crisis management stimulus packages.
